Perfumery, or the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and was further refined by the Romans and Persians. Although Perfumery also existed in India, much of its fragrances are incense based. The earliest distillation of Ittar, arabic meaning scent, was mentioned in the Hindu Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita.
In 2005 archaeologists uncovered what are believed to be the world's oldest perfumery in Pyrgos, Cyprus. The perfumes date back more than 4,000 years. The perfumes were discovered in an ancient perfumery. At least 60 stills, mixing bowls, funnels and perfumery, bottles were found in the 43,000-squart-foot Perfumery.
In ancient times people used herbs and spices, like almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin, bergamot, as well as flowers.

When choosing perfumery, you have to remember it all depends on the occasion, fresh fruity and floral fragrances are appropriate for the hot summer months, while the spicier warmer scents are appropriate for the colder months. During the day wear a subtle scent. Go in for something stronger for an evening party.
When testing perfumery, you shouldn’t be wearing any fragrance or scented body lotion. Make sure your skin is clean. Apply the perfume and wait for a few minutes before you smell it – a fragrance always smells different several minutes after you apply it, hold your nose an inch away when smelling. Don’t test more than four perfumes at once because you will become confused. Remember a fragrance smells different on different people because of the skin’s secretions. If you like the scent of your friend’s perfume that doesn’t mean that it will smell the same way on your skin.
